Majolica Roosterhead Pitchers

Legend has it that the origin of these colorful roosterhead pitchers dates back to the early Renaissance, the Medici family who were the wealthiest and most powerful family in the Republic of Florence, and their bitter rivals the Pazzi family.

As the story goes, the Pazzis and their assassins attempted to sneak into the town of Gallina (which means hen, and there were a lot in this particular town) during the night with the intention of murdering Guiliano Medici. However, the Pazzis were not prepared to encounter so many chickens, and the chickens, which were not prepared to be awoken in the middle of the night, started cackling and crowing. This noise in turn awoke the townsfolk who were able to capture the would-be assassins, saving Guiliano’s life.

To show his appreciation, Guiliano had the local ceramicists create wine jugs in the shape of the chickens that saved his life. He then held a festival for the town and handed out the replicas, which he said would bring good luck to all in warding off assassins.

Today, roosterhead pitchers are traditionally given as housewarming gifts to protect the recipient from trespassers and bad fortune.
